Director of Graduate Advising and Engagement for the Humanities (DGAE)

In this newly created, mission-critical position, the Director will be responsible for enhancing graduate education in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences by helping doctoral students in the humanities navigate the integration of the many facets of academic life into a coherent and fulfilling academic and career plan.

Reporting to the PI, Graduate Dean Holger Hoock, and serving as a full member of a high-level Steering Committee, the Director will provide overall leadership and project management for the grant.

The DGAE will

  • create and oversee an immersive fellowship program across the non-profit, public, and corporate sectors
  • take the lead in designing and implementing an annual Humanities Impact Celebration, Versatile Humanists Boot Camp, and Alums-in-Residence Week
  • provide career guidance to doctoral students
  • serve as a resource for Directors of Graduate Studies and the wider graduate faculty
  • engage a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to enhance graduate student experiences on and off campus
  • design and oversee new initiatives
  • supervise a Project Coordinator

In advising and mentoring doctoral students, the Director will help them integrate co- and extra-curricular experiences into research portfolios, pedagogical training, and dissertation research. Integral to broader efforts to modernize our cultures of graduate advising and team-based mentoring, the DGAE will advise students as they set professional development goals, pursue research grants, forge and maintain strong mentoring networks, and apply for jobs within and beyond the academy.

The DGAE will hold a Ph.D. in an arts or humanities discipline and have at least four years of relevant experience; at least two years of work experience outside of academia is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have work experience both inside and outside academia, including in graduate education, advising, mentoring, career development, human resources, or related fields, and command broad knowledge of graduate education practices, the humanities, and career paths within and beyond the academy for doctoral students in the humanities.

The position is funded by a 42-month grant, with an intention of sustaining the position long-term, assuming that its existence has proven effective and that funds are available to sustain it.
